When I consider the astonishing news events that continue to scroll across our TV screens, the internet, Facebook, I am reminded of three little words: Do Not Fear.
It seems very obvious to me that we are living in what some would say are uncertain times. Storms bash our cities, fires consume our forests, madmen gun down and kill seemingly innocent people — at concerts, on sidewalks, in churches. It’s crazy. Yet those three words remain: Do Not Fear.
I wonder, how is it that we fail to see the underlying reason behind it all? It baffles me.
We think, that by strengthening gun legislation that will fix the problem. Will it? People use vehicles to mow people down in our cities. Are we to legislate against cars??
We attribute the problem to mental illness, believing that is the root cause. People fear mental illness, so it’s a reliable backstop. One in 5 adults suffer with some form of mental illness and it’s estimated that 60 percent of the mentally ill are undiagnosed. Are we to legislate against twenty percent of the population?
And then there is terrorism. How are we to prevent against domestic attacks? Believed to be fueled by an ideology that we also fear, are we then to legislate against freedom of religion as well?
I contend that all of these concerns are real. They are. There’s no getting around them. But, I’m telling you that I believe that they are not the root cause. They are aren’t. They are all things which we fear. That is what they have in common. But they are not the cause. They are the symptoms.
The root problem is evil, ladies and gentlemen. And there doesn’t seem to be much we can do about it. What we contend with is evil —spiritual warfare — fueled by hate and fear. We are warring not against each other but against an effective, invisible enemy that takes possession of people who carry out horrific acts.
Please believe me. I’m not crazy. Spiritual warfare is real. If you don’t believe me, then do nothing.
If you want to do something, get on your knees and turn to God. He is the One who is in charge. We think we can solve this and legislate against that. Take my word for it. This is a war of supernatural epic proportions and it will continue unless and until we as a country get on our knees, turn to God and beg for mercy.
I’m urging you. Please. Read your Bible. Do what it says.
